Why is My Car Leaking Water?

Should you notice your car is leaking water, the first thing you’ll want to do is find out where it’s coming from. It’s likely condensation coming from your air conditioning system or even near your tailpipe. These will cause small water puddles near the back of the engine compartment.

If you need someone to take a look for you, our service team is standing by. In the meantime, we can help you learn how to check where the water is coming from, as well as about what other liquids it could be and what that means.

Identifying the Cause of Leaking Water

Notice water leaking from under your car? We can help you indicate where the water is coming from. Here are the steps to take:

  • The first thing to do is to make sure that the liquid is actually just water. Place a piece of paper underneath the leak. If the fluid is a different color, you’ll want to make a service appointment to have your vehicle inspected.
  • If you notice more than a small puddle of water is coming from your exhaust, a blown gasket may be causing coolant to be burned along with fuel. When this happens, there will be large amounts of water and white smoke emerging from the exhaust pipe.
  • Though coolant is typically easy to spot due to its color, it’s always a good idea to check the coolant level to confirm this is the issue. If the coolant is low, bring your vehicle in for an appointment with our expert technicians.
  • It’s also possible for fluid to be leaking from a cracked windshield wiper fluid reservoir. If you’ve used water in your windshield wiper fluid, the water could freeze, expanding and causing cracks in the plastic container. Windshield wiper fluid will usually be light blue or light green in color, and you will typically find it near the front tires so it’s easy to detect.

Should the fluid clearly be something other than water, you’ll want to have your vehicle checked out by one of our technicians. Schedule service today and we’ll have your vehicle running smoothly on North Las Vegas roads in no time.
