What is a Timing Belt?

A timing belt, also known as a cambelt, harmonizes the camshaft and crankshaft rotation to ensure both are synced so the valves and pistons can operate properly. It’s crucial that the valves and pistons work correctly as the valves control the air/fuel mixture intake and exhaust gas and push the pistons down as fuel ignites in the combustion chamber. It’s important to keep your timing belt healthy. Learn more about what a timing belt is, as well as how much a timing belt costs with our service team at Findlay Acura.

How Much is a Timing Belt?

So, how much is a timing belt? This depends on if the surrounding parts are damaged or if there’s been a break in the timing belt. If it breaks, the valves won’t work in sync. They’ll hit the pistons and cause more damage. This could cost up to $2,000+ if the valves, water pumps, and pistons are damaged. With no damage, you can expect to pay around $500 to $1,000 with parts and labor costs. When it comes to replacing the timing belt regularly, most manufacturers recommend replacing the belt 60,000 miles to 100,000 miles.

Signs Your Car Needs a New Timing Belt

No matter if your vehicle has a rubber belt or timing chain, it’s easy to tell when there’s an issue to worry about. If you notice any of the following warning signs, you’ll want to schedule a repair appointment with our service team immediately:

  • Ticking noise coming from the engine
  • The engine won’t turn over
  • The engine acts up between 2000 – 4000 RPM
  • The engine misfires
  • More smoke and fumes than normal
  • Oil leaks from the front of the motor

Timing Belts vs. Timing Chains: What’s the Difference?

While timing belts and timing chains have the same function, there are differences between the two that include what they’re made of and where they’re located. Timing belts are crafted out of reinforced rubber whereas timing chains are constructed of metal. Timing belts are a lot quieter because of the softer materials and are located outside of the engine. Timing chains are located inside the engine and use the engine oil for lubrication. Over time, timing chains have been upgraded to operate quietly with little vibration.
