What is coolant and how can it be checked? Coolant is a fluid that transfers heat and regulates the temperature of the engine block and surrounding parts. No matter whether you drive a new model or a used vehicle, engine coolant is important to maintain. Engine coolant contains an additive that will ensure it doesn’t freeze below 32 degrees Fahrenheit and that it won’t overheat above 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Learn more about engine coolant and how to check coolant levels with our service team at Findlay Acura today!
In order to check the coolant level, you won’t even have to open the radiator cap. Instead, check the markings on the side of the reservoir. If the liquid reaches the “full” marking line, you’re good to go. If the marking is lower, you’ll want to remove the radiator cap and add the coolant or a 50/50 mix of coolant/water. While looking around, be sure to check out the hoses connected to the radiator for leaks or damage.
Note: If you’re adding more liquid to the cooling system, be sure the engine has cooled. Also, don’t attempt to open the radiator cap while the engine is hot.
If you notice a sludgy appearance, schedule service as soon as possible. Coolant is thinner than oil but thicker than water. If it looks sludgy, there’s a good chance your car has an internal gasket leak. Driving is possible, but a leaking gasket will drain the coolant quickly and could lead to your engine overheating, which means the possibility of severe damage.
Over time, coolant levels will deplete. It’s a good idea to check up on the cooling system every three to six months. Typically this liquid is blue, green, yellow, or red. If it appears colorless or a brownish color, flush the system and replace the fluid.
