Commander Award

Findlay Acura involvement with Toys for Tots golf tournament results in prestigious Commander's Award

The dedication exhibited by Findlay Acura and its general manager James Cobbs resulted recently in the presentation of the prestigious Commander's Award.

Cobbs was honored by Thomas J. McGrath, chairman of the Toys for Tots Las Vegas golf tournament that is now in its ninth year. The dealership situated in the Valley Automall played a big part in the Tee Off event played at Nellis Air Force Base Nov. 13.

McGrath said the most recent tournament was the most successful ever generating $35,000 which was used to purchase toys for the underprivileged children of Las Vegas

"Findlay Acura furnished players along with the car for the hole-in-one contest," explained McGrath, who is also senior vice president for Wells Fargo Insurance Services. "Our tournament is only successful with participation from local businesses and we are very thankful to Findlay Acura for its participation in our most successful tournament to date."

McGrath added that Findlay Automotive Group also participated in the first annual Tee Off For Tots tournament in Laughlin Dec. 4. The Findlay dealership Findlay Motor Company led by General Manager Ray Meins in Bullhead City was an additional sponsor.

"The tournament in Laughlin was smaller but we were still able to raise significant money for the purchase of toys for needy children in the area," added McGrath. "Our mission has increased especially during the downturn in the economy."

McGrath explained that U.S. Marine Reserves started the Toys for Tots program in 1947, and now distributes toys to 100 local non-profit agencies in Las Vegas each year.  The Marines Reserves added the Toys for Tots program which was started by a Marine Corp Major Bill Hendricks in Los Angeles.

"When we deliver these toys to the underprivileged, you cannot believe how grateful they are," he said. "The experience stays with you. In fact, I carry a letter in my brief case that was written by one of the children who was so happy to be remembered at Christmas."

McGrath explained that the Commander's Award is given to financial contributors who exceed a certain level of sponsorship.

"This is an incredible honor and we are so proud to be a part of Toys for Tots," said Cobbs. "We had a great time, and will be back this year."

Also competing in the tournament was Findlay Acura Internet Manager Jim Donohue.

Findlay Acura has risen to become one of the top-producing dealerships of its kind in the nation. The dealership is heavily-involved in community activities and most recently provided 100 turkeys for needy families at Whitney Elementary. In addition, Findlay Acura helped the school in the purchase of a 2005 Chrysler van that is now being used to provide valuable transportation for students in need of doctors' appointments.

McGrath said further information regarding future Toys for Tots tournaments can be found at www.toysfortotsvegas.org.
